Ingredient

retinol

What it is

The most widely available, gentlest over-the-counter retinoid — good for beginners, but slower and less potent than prescription options like tretinoin or adapalene, since skin has to do extra conversion work before it starts acting.

How it works

Must undergo two sequential enzymatic conversions in skin (retinol -> retinaldehyde -> retinoic acid) before becoming biologically active at the retinoic acid receptor.
